Keeneland Race course is my old grounds, having been an exercise girl from the early 1970's. It's the most beautiful track I ever worked at, except for the old Hialeah in Florida. I attended the races every day with a pocket of twenty dollars, and always made enough for a nice steak dinner that night. Alas, that knack has left me, for a person has to go every day to see the races and know how each horse runs. Judicial choices of which races to bet on helps too, as in don't bet every race! A wise old jockey once told me "You can beat a race, but you can't beat the races." In this painting, the yellow color on the grooms vest should be the same color as the saddle blanket, but I wanted to spice up the painting and he just disappeared with a green vest. Back in my day, they didn't use those vests, so I did what I wanted for the good of the painting.
